The half-time siren went at 24-nil. What happened in the next fourteen minutes is now the subject of at least three competing accounts, one lawyer's letter and a squad meeting that ran until midnight.
What is agreed: the head coach entered the dressing room. A board member entered ninety seconds later. Neither took part in the second half.
"We came back out and he wasn't on the sideline," one player said. "Nobody told us anything. We just played."
Six weeks in the making
The decision was not spontaneous. flxba understands the board had met twice in the preceding fortnight and had already sounded out two replacement candidates, one of whom is currently under contract elsewhere.
The timing — mid-match, mid-season, mid-crisis — has been defended internally as "decisive" and described externally, by three former players, in language we cannot print.
The second half
For the record, they lost the second half 12-10, having conceded 24 in the first. Whatever else the decision achieved, the players' response to it will follow this board around for a long time.
